TLC separation of extracted AHLs and standards. Samples in ethyl acetate were spotted onto a C18 reversed-phase TLC plate that was developed in 60% methanol in water (v/v). The plate was overlaid with an agar suspension an Agrobacterium tumefaciens reporter strain and incubated 2 d. Spots are labeled with measured Rf values. (A) Migration of AHL standards: at left, C10-HSL, with two contaminant activities, and at right, C6-HSL standard. (B) Activities of extracted cultures of E. coli pAK017 ZK102, at left, and N. europaea at right. | |

Migration of selected AHL standards as observed by Shaw et al. (1997). The Rfs of 3-hydroxy- and 3-oxo- substituted AHLs are identical, but spots from but 3-oxo- substituted AHLs have a characteristic tail. |
