Production of quorum-sensing molecules by N. europaea
TLC separation of extracted AHLs and standards. Samples in ethyl acetate were spotted onto a C18 reversed-phase TLC plate that was developed in 60% methanol in water (v/v). The plate was overlaid with an agar suspension an Agrobacterium tumefaciens reporter strain and incubated 2 d. Spots are labeled with measured Rf values. (A) Migration of AHL standards: at left, C10-HSL, with two contaminant activities, and at right, C6-HSL standard. (B) Activities of extracted cultures of E. coli pAK017 ZK102, at left, and N. europaea at right.

Migration of selected AHL standards as observed by Shaw et al. (1997). The Rfs of 3-hydroxy- and 3-oxo- substituted AHLs are identical, but spots from but 3-oxo- substituted AHLs have a characteristic tail.
